Client Quote #55: wrong

We’ve been sold the message that our body can be easily manipulated for a long while now, that if it’s not this or that weight or size, it must be our fault. Certainly if I follow the same eating patterns and exercise routines as the thin-bodied person on social media, surely I should be able to achieve the same?

Fortunately for us (unfortunately for diet culture), our bodies are far more complex than that. Do you ever wonder what attributes to the differences in our body types and sizing? Just like fingerprints, each of our bodies are designed differently through thousands of years of evolution adapting to various strategies that help us survive in different places. This means we are inherently gifted with varying set-point weight ranges, sizes, body composition, metabolic rates, and physical strengths and challenges. The biggest contributor to the way our body is is our genetics, something we do not have much control over. Check out the video- Doodle Science, on Youtube if you like a better explanation on the health at every size movement.

Shifting out of the body that was designed to be ours has proven to be incredibly costly. It requires significant mental and physical effort, and can even damage our health. Diet culture refuses to allow people to exist authentically in our bodies in the pretense of health- and what positive impact has that achieved?  Focusing on health promoting behaviors on their own rather than weight or body sizes brings about far more genuine wellness than focusing on a thin-ideal.
