Competition and comparison is a big component of how ED provides an illusion of control. It creates arbitrary benchmarks to achieve, like always eating less or moving more than the people around us. But this only ever provides temporary relief and often just increases self-consciousness in the long run because we erase ourselves when we donβt honour our own needsπ«©
Rather than coping through comparison, work with your therapist to figure out what it is that weβre actually looking for to stay grounded π§π»ββοΈ
Nutritionally, it makes little sense to compare our food intake/variety with others because what everyone needs is unique to their genetics, environment, and lifestyle π
Diet culture causes harm for example by generalizing nutrition recommendations for adults to youth and teens, who have vastly different needs, all the time π§βπ§βπ§βπ§
Part of recovery is staying firm with getting your nutritional needs met without wavering by others getting their needs met.
