Client Quote # 78: food cost
Accessibility of food 🥦🍞🥫 is a significant and albeit often forgotten key factor in recovery. Food insecurity inherently causes intake restriction so unsurprisingly, it is commonly linked to disordered eating and eating disorders. It is also why marginalized communities are often at higher risk for ED.
It was reported that back in 2023, Canadian grocery costs have increased at double the rate of inflation 📈
Popular grocers were accused of “greedflation” and thankfully a current code of conduct has been in development to help prevent any more profit-mongering behaviors. While that sounds optimistic for Canadian shoppers, the current reality is that working a full-time job doesn’t guarantee food security anymore.
And if an ED is in the picture, food becomes even more difficult to be prioritized in the budget 🧾
